When I was growing up, radio and TV stations would periodically perform a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. The test would consist of an announcer telling you that they were going to perform a test, which would be followed by a loud and annoying squeal, and finally, something like the following statement. As a computer programmer, I frequently had need of some test data. I would often use the following text, which is almost verbatim what was announced in the test, with a small modification that would make me smile.
This is a test. This is only a test. This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. The broadcasters of your area, in voluntary cooperation with federal, state, and local authorities, have developed this system to keep you informed in the event of an emergency. If this had been an actual emergency, the attention signal you just heard would have been followed by official news, weather, and sports.
